After recording an old man's story in the Gende language, I asked Ruge to tell the same story (about World War II) in tok pisin. Ruge introduced the story with these sentences:

"Nau dispela nait. Bomai stori long taim emi kisim tultul na luluai long en. Nau mi laik stori, nau olsem mi yet mi witness long wokim olsem pisin."

Translation:

Now this night, Bomai told a story about the time he was made a village leader by the government. Now I want to tell the story, like a witness, translating it into pidgin.
